The Challenge
The Indian Nations At Risk Task Force identified factors that contributed to poor educational outcome for Indian children. One major factor was that few teachers had adequate skills and training to effectively teach Native American children.
The Solution
Culture and School Success: Educating American Indian Children was designed to address that concern and help teachers provide a better learning experience. The course is based on the premise that all children are entitled to have their culture reflected in and affirmed by the schools they attend.
Other Benefits
The Graduate School of Education developed this class primarily for pre-service teachers, though some segments are used for in-service training of current teachers of K-12 and beyond. This facilitator-mediated distance learning class consists of fourteen 90-minute sessions on Indian education, language, and culture. Sample topics include community partnering, transitions from home to school, and the negative impact of stereotypes on youth.
