UPDATE ON HD DVD vs BLU-RAY NEXT GENERATION DVD FORMATS...
Announced the week of February 18th, 2008, Toshiba, as the manufacturer and distributor of HD-DVD products, has ended all production of its HD-DVD players and recorders. Given other announcements from Hollywood film studios in early 2008 that they will focus on the authoring and distribution of SD and Blu-ray DVD formats to the exclusion of HD-DVD (e.g., Warner Bros.), the format war for optical discs in the next generation high definition/high density arena is over. Although there are competing formats (China's EVD and India's VMD), consumers in the United States will assuredly see only SD and Blu-ray versions of movies and other video/interactive content. The question before the marketplace is whether rental and downloading of high quality movie content will supplant actual purchase of optical media (e.g., Netflix, AppleTV). Outside of Hollywood, indendent content producers and educational institutions continue to express concern over mandatory AACS copy protection on all replicated Blu-ray titles (excluding recordable Blu-ray media).
